YES – Youth Employment Support

die Berater® say ”YES “ to Europe´s young people and actively support them in their search for jobs

The whole of Europe is currently facing the same problem: The increase in youth unemployment is alarming. Especially badly educated workers or young people, who are disadvantaged due to personal reasons, are affected. “Companies are often afraid of employing disadvantaged young people, although it´s often exactly those people who can introduce many new ideas and valuable knowledge into a company and who are highly motivated,“ says Konrad Frankhauser, HR management at die Berater®.
It´s simply innovative and creative solutions that are needed in order for both sides´ needs – those of the company and of the young people – to be satisfied. Some concrete ideas were presented last November at the Youth Employment Support Conference in Salzburg. There, scientists, adult educators, entrepreneurs and decision makers from all over Europe, all active in the area of apprentice training, had the chance to meet. And, of course, the youths themselves were able to express their side of the story:
They reported on experiences in looking for a job and on the concrete need for support.
The conference in Salzburg was the finale of the EU project YES (
), which supports small and middle-sized companies in employing ”disadvantaged“ or ”difficult“ young people. The project was coordinated by die Berater® and is based on five Blended-Learning-Levels in connection with a tailor-made coaching offer.

Bratislava branch opening

A new die Berater® branch opened in Slovakia at the end of last year.

Central and Eastern Europe continue to present business opportunities as markets with good chances for growth and returns, an opportunity which Austrian companies in particular wish to take advantage of. After all, Austria’s central geographical location makes it the perfect gateway to the east.
die Berater® itself was only represented in Eastern Europe on EU projects up until 2009; but even then management had recognised that there is potential there. The number of people eager to learn in Eastern European countries is on the increase. In demand are mainly language and IT courses that lead to a certification recognised throughout Europe (e.g. ECDL). “There were many good reasons why we decided to take this step in a neighbouring country; firstly a location close to the border offers very good opportunities for interesting cooperation, for example in cross-border programmes. Secondly the export of education to new markets is a topic with enormous growth potential. Last but not least, we can provide effective support in two directions from this location: we can service international companies who are resident in Slovakia and we can advise Austrian companies who are taking the step into Eastern Europe“, explained Mag. Mag. Martin Röhsner, Managing Director of die Berater®.
By-the-way: anyone looking in Bratislava for the best equipped training rooms for internal seminars or for small events is also best served by the die Berater facilities there. In Bratislava as well as in Austria the training and consulting company makes its infrastructure available based on hiring out its space and facilities.

die Berater® – for the sixth time in succession at the Great Place to Work® Award

The only further education and training company in the ranking

(Vienna) On 20 February 2009 the Great Place to Work® Awards were bestowed in the ballroom of the Congress Casino Baden. Already for the sixth time in succession is the training and consulting company die Berater® Unternehmensberatungs GmbH to be assessed as the only further education and training institute in Austria. The adult-education institution and state price winner achieved a ranking among the top 10 best employees amongst the small and medium-sized enterprises in Austria.
die Berater® – the human enterprise. “Our corporate culture is based on fair play, mutual appreciation and tolerance. The centre of our actions is the work for and with people,” explains Mag. Martin Röhsner, managing director of die Berater®, the continuous ranking amongst Austria’s best employers. “In particular in times of a crisis, when employees are insecure, it is important to create a basis of trust and show continuity”, Röhsner continues. All the more for a further education and training company focusing on the labour market (training, activation, outplacement, etc.). “Every employee has the same value for the company, regardless of the position and contractual basis. The independent trainers are also fully integrated in our corporate culture”, adds Mag. Konrad Fankhauser, deputy managing director and HR manager of die Berater®.
Temp work at die Berater®. The company’s success – which was honoured in 2008 with the state prize for adult education – as one of the best employers in Austria, is also continued in the new business area of workforce outplacement. “Temp work as a form of supplying staff is freshly approached by us with the aim of creating a win-win situation for business and people”, explains Röhsner. As a consultant, seminar provider and coach for business as well as a partner company of the CATRO Personalsuche und -auswahl GmbH personnel consultant, the company is in day-to-day cooperation with potential employers and knows the need and the requirements of businesses first hand. “Our temp employees are supported by us in targeted further training and enjoy a high level of appreciation in a friendly work environment. We see temp work as a stepping stone into a career and full-time employment”, adds Fankhauser.
Best employer 2009. The assessment was conducted by the institute Great Place to Work® on the basis of an anonymous employee survey and a culture audit of the HR division. The crucial criterion for a good workplace is the quality of the relationship to the managers, colleagues and to the personal tasks and company. The quality is gauged from an employee perspective on the basis of the factors of plausibility, respect, fairness, pride and team orientation.

Continuity, expansion and increase in innovative power as the most important objectives

(Vienna) As of 16 December 2008 Mag. Martin Röhsner has taken over CATRO Personalsuche und -auswahl GmbH (Catro) with all its subsidiaries abroad and in Austria from Dr Christoph Ulmer. The new owner continue to drive the successful expansion pursued by Dr Christoph Ulmer over the past years as well as the establishment of a series of innovative products and services.
Mag. Martin Röhsner founded the Austrian training and consulting company die Berater® Unternehmensberatungs GmbH 10 years ago. In the meantime, the company employs a workforce of 400 at more than 50 locations in Austria and is expanding into Slovakia as of the start of 2009. The core business of Catro consists – since the establishment 30 years ago – of searching, selecting, evaluating and analysing the potential of employees for companies. Apart from the offices in Austria, there are also branches in Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia. “Taking over Catro will result in synergies which can be used positively for both companies,” explains Röhsner. “As regards the future, my most important concern is, however, continuity,” continues Röhsner. The objectives for the coming year are to increase the innovative power by expanding the product and service portfolio in the Management Consulting and Management Diagnostic sector as well as to continue the successful expansion course in eastern and south eastern Europe.

YES – helping SMEs to employ difficult youth

Youth Employment Support - An EU project managed by die Berater®

(Salzburg) Youth unemployment is high once more, while at the same time many sectors are suffering from an acute shortage of skilled staff. The European YES (Youth Employment Support) project, coordinated by the Austrian consultancy and training company die Berater®, is tackling this problem and offering small and medium-sized enterprises help in recruiting and training young adults with a difficult background. The main objective is to improve the ability of managers in small and medium-sized companies to interact with "difficult" young people in employment and training situations.
The EU project - YES. Employing young people is particularly challenging for SMEs. "Many young job applicants left school early, have no vocational training and are faced with socio-economic disadvantages. Even if many companies would happily give such young people an opportunity, HR managers are often very reluctant to employ them," explains Stefan Oblasser, Director of die Berater® West. The EU's YES project, coordinated by die Berater®, is developing, testing and implementing a wide-ranging support system for HR managers, those responsible for recruitment and development in SMEs, and training managers and trainers in SMEs who work with young people. "In this way, YES is helping to break down the barriers which separate employers from this type of applicant," believes Franziska Steffen, EU Manager with die Berater®. The project is receiving financial support from the European Commission's programme for lifelong learning and is due to run from November 2007 to October 2009. It involves eight project partners from eight European countries, and is building on the results of two previous projects, Eurojobmediator and ADEC (Adult Educator in Company).
The elements of the YES system. The YES support system is based on 3 components. Five blended learning modules (a mix of face-to-face seminars and eLearning) teaches the specific skills used when dealing with "difficult" young people. The modules cover such issues as the law on training and employing young people, information about youth culture, teaching skills and soft skills such as communication, conflict management, team building and team leading, in the context of dealing with young people. The blended learning is supplemented by coaching providing close support when selecting applicants, during the initial phase after they have been hired, and when conflicts occur. A learning platform is available as a source of information and to provide mutual support for the organisations involved.
Practical trial in Salzburg region. The EU's YES project will be implemented and tested from September 2008 to March 2009 in our Salzburg office, drawing heavily on the "Level 10" training track for helping young people find work which die Berater® and the Salzburg branch of the Austrian Public Employment Service have been operating successfully since 2003. "The companies, mainly from the wood and metal processing sector, can use the service free of charge during this period and give feedback from practical experience which will help to further improve the service," says Steffen. The project's findings are to be presented at an international conference in September 2009.

For more information about the project, go to
or contact Franziska Steffen at
or by phone on (+43 1) 532 45 45-1156

Think business! Promoting entrepreneurial culture in adult education

»PECAE -Promoting Entrepreneurial Culture in Adult Education«.

This is the name under which a project funded by the EU's Grundtvig programme aims to teach entrepreneurial thinking to willing adults.
The idea behind the project goes back to a European Union report that highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship for economic growth and development and for business competition and personal well-being. In PECAE, a course was developed for adult educators that aims to help them teach entrepreneurial skills and behaviours.
These business skills are not to be taught directly but communicated as a crossover subject within existing training courses. There seems to be a boom in crossover subjects in Grundtvig projects. As with the Grundtvig »FoodLiteracy« project, which made food and everything to do with food a crossover subject for adult education (see the DIE magazine, edition 111/2007, pages 46-48), economics and entrepreneurship have been put on the agenda as subjects that are "worth teaching" in adult education. In the case of both projects, coordination has been provided by Austrian institutions, this time »die Berater®«, a corporate consultancy and adult education institution based in Vienna, along with partners from Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Cyprus. The new training option was presented to experts from the fields of adult education, politics and economics in March, at an international conference in Nicosia in Cyprus. Two further international PECAE courses are to be held in Oporto and Vienna before the project ends in September of this year, with a view to arming multipliers from adult education with the vital tools.
